Understanding the Internet and its Capabilities

The internet provides many services that are available to anyone who has the ability to connect to it. The most notable of these services is the World Wide Web. E-mail, bulletin boards and chat lines are some of the others. The web gives users the ability to search the internet for information by use of a browser.

There are many different browsers in use all over the world. Some of these browsers only have text capabilities, while others allow the user to see images, colors and different fonts for text. When you are designing your site, it is important to take all these variables into consideration.

Defining a Website

A website is an address on the World Wide Web. It is a collection of pages containing different methods of providing information. This information is accessed either by someone typing in a word or phrase known as a query into a search engine or by you providing the address via word of mouth or a link from another website.

Your website pages are stored on a server under a domain name and are interlinked with hyperlinks throughout your site. By connecting to the domain, the visitor has access to the information you have uploaded whether it be articles, products or content for amusement.

The Elements of Designing a Website

When going through the design process it is very important to keep certain guidelines. Making sure the site has an easy navigation system set up in a logical fashion should be one. Another point to make pertains to the professionalism of the site.

When you are trying to convey information on a particular topic make sure the rest of the page has relevant content. Keeping your content up to date ensures that visitors will come back for more when the need arises. You will also want to consider linking to other sources that can help provide credible information and at the same time getting a link back to your site.

Using Files and Folders

During the design process, you are going to be creating files and folders. A file is common data that is saved to a disk, hard drive, CD or other type of medium capable of storing electronic information.

Files can be grouped together to create applications or be independent and contain the information for your website pages. Files are saved to media that allow them to be accessible even after the computer has been turned off and then on again. Files have extension on them based on the application that they were created with or for the application that is going to utilize the file.

Web files usually have the .htm or html extension and your image files might have a .jpg or .gif extension. Folders are where you put a group of like files. This makes it easier to find and retrieve files later in your website development. A folder is nothing more than a way to organize files and even other folders.
