Writing an EBook

WHY WRITE AN EBOOK

EBooks provide a format for you to deliver information that people are looking for. As the author, you have the choice of what to write about. Your topic might include some of your personal interests, hobbies or other information related to your field of expertise. When writing an eBook, a large amount of the normal pressures related to authoring are eliminated. There are no deadlines, expensive publishing costs or costly marketing plans.

BENEFITS

Many benefits come from writing and publishing an eBook. The first being, you profit 100% from everything you sell. Since there is no physical product, maintaining an inventory, purchasing packaging or going through the shipping processes are not required. Your eBook can be sold or given away depending on your purpose for writing it in the first place.

You might give your eBook away as a gift to help promote your site or another product you are marketing. If you do choose to sell your book, it is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You do not need to be present to make the sale which frees up your time to write more eBooks. It is never guaranteed but some people can and do earn a living from writing eBooks.

HOW TO START THE WRITING PROCESS

The first thing on your to-do list is come up with a topic people want information about. Some of the easiest ways to do this is visit forums and discussion groups related to your field of expertise. If you see multiple questions or inquiries pertaining to what you are knowledgeable about, then you have the start point of your eBook writing adventure.

Take your topic and break it down into categories which will turn into your chapter titles. For example, if your topic was model railroading, you might have: getting started with model railroading, types of trains, creating a layout, wiring your setup, and so on. After you generate your chapter titles, it is time to write the content for each chapter.

It is important to provide only pertinent information and avoid fluffing. Readers will want to know the facts so keep it simple. Write your eBook so that it is easily read. Use fonts that are user-friendly and colors that are not hard on the eyes. Simple black text on a white background keeps your eBook looking clear and professional.

CHOOSING THE MOST UNIVERSAL FILE FORMAT

Your will need to choose a format for your eBook. The most popular and universal is PDF (portable document format). When you create a PDF file, you don't have to worry about how it is displayed on different computers. It will look the same on every computer preserving your document in the way you created it.

Due to their small size, PDF files can be downloaded, included in emails or viewed directly from a website. The person who wishes to view your eBook only needs to have a free copy of an Adobe reader program which is available at their site.

THE STRUCTURE OF YOUR eBOOK

Since your eBook is just an electronic form of a book, you should use the same format of presenting your information. It should include an opening page, a forward and a table of contents. Chapter titles should be bold face and should start at the top of a page. People are used to how books are formatted and if you follow the same techniques, they will be able to easily navigate their way through your eBook.

EBOOK SECURITY

There are many unlawful and malicious people in the world and simply password protecting your material is not always enough. Even though your writings are automatically copyrighted under US law, you might want to register it. This registration is only necessary if you ever had to file an infringement lawsuit.

ACCEPTING MONEY FOR YOUR EBOOK

Third party credit card processors provide everyone from home-based businesses to large corporations to accept credit cards. These services handle all of the processing for you and are relatively easy to set up. PAYPAL is one on a list of companies providing you with the ability to accept credit card payments. Their website provides detailed instructions on setting up an account and also has information on how to promote your product as well.

GETTING YOUR EBOOK OUT THERE

One of the best ways to promote your eBook is with an affiliate program. Although there are programs available for you to purchase, it is much easier to use a company such as Click Bank or Commission Junction. These companies track the sales of your product, let the people who are promoting your product view their sales stats and handle the payment process to you and your affiliates.

GIVE IT A TRY

With so many resources available to you on the internet, it is easy for you to write, publish, promote and profit from your unique area of interest and expertise. The costs involved are little to nothing and you can start immediately.
